About NTRP

NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is a standard scale from 1.0 to 7.0 that describes playing ability. Levels go in 0.5 steps (e.g. 3.0, 3.5, 4.0). Lower numbers are beginner, higher are advanced; 5.5+ is expert level.

In this app you choose your level yourself (self-rating). In official play, NTRP can also be calculated from match results and opponent strength. Pick the level that best matches your current game.

What each level can do

  • 1.xJust starting: learning to hit the ball over the net, basic forehand/backhand. Can rally with a cooperative partner on a short court.
  • 2.xBeginner: can sustain short rallies from the baseline, limited consistency and placement. Developing serve and volley. Plays mainly for fun.
  • 3.xIntermediate: consistent medium-paced shots, knows basic positioning. Can hit with some spin, approach the net occasionally. Still makes unforced errors under pressure.
  • 4.xAdvanced: solid technique, can rally with pace and spin, use variety (lob, drop shot). Good first serve, can volley. Understands basic tactics and can change game plan.
  • 5.xExpert: powerful and consistent from all areas, strong serve and return. Uses strategy, handles pace well. Often has competitive or league experience.

Serve by level

  • 1.xLearning to get the ball in: underhand or very basic toss. Many double faults; focus is on starting the point.
  • 2.xCan get first serve in sometimes; weak second serve. Developing toss and motion; placement is inconsistent.
  • 3.xFirst serve usually goes in; second serve is weaker but reliable. Some spin; can aim to one side. Double faults less common.
  • 4.xGood first serve (pace or placement); reliable second serve with spin. Can serve and volley; varies placement on key points.
  • 5.xStrong first serve (pace, spin, placement); effective second serve. Can vary placement and spin; uses serve as a weapon.
